Highland Animal Hospital: A Legacy of Care

Founded by Dr. Akin Simpson, Highland Animal Hospital originally operated as a private practice until its acquisition by Dr. Scott Burt in 1983. Dr. Burt continued to manage the hospital as a private practice for 36 years. In October 2019, Heartland Veterinary Partners acquired Highland Animal Hospital, ushering in a new chapter of continued excellence in veterinary care.

Since February 2024, Dr. Kate Roeder has been an integral part of the Highland Animal Hospital team, and in June 2025, Dr. Hailey Berry joined the practice. Together with the dedicated staff, they take pride in serving the pets and people of the Big Spring community.

Highland Animal Hospital is committed to offering the most advanced and up-to-date services, including diagnostic imaging, comprehensive examinations, and vaccinations, ensuring the highest standard of care for every patient.

Mouse

About Mouse

Mouse
The Boss

I came to Highland Animal Hospital in 2012 when a good Samaritan found me on the side of the road after I was hit by a car. I had several injures. Dr. Burt and staff helped nurse me back to health and gave me a home. I am truly blessed, but don’t be fooled, I do run the place.

I enjoy Temptation treats and I will not leave you alone until I get them. I will knock things off shelves if I am being ignored.

I also enjoy hiding when it’s time to go to bed. Hide and seek is my favorite game.

I am not a fan of dogs and try to stay far away from them. I do love laying on the front counter and greeting the clients and letting them pet me until I get tired of it. You know it’s on my terms.

Memosa

About Memosa

Memosa
The Boss in Training

I came to Highland Animal Hospital in 2025, I was found by a client of ours. She brought me here to Highland Animal Hospital for vaccinations and a stay here so I could get used to human company. I had been living on the streets, so I was a little afraid of people. I turned on my kitty charm and won the hearts of the staff. The rest is history, and I became “The Boss in Training.” Although I still have a lot to learn from Mouse; but she gets annoyed by me FAST, so training is slow.

I enjoy my food very MUCH, Temptation treats are FANTASTIC, I will not leave anyone alone until I get them. I will knock things off shelves and scream if I am being ignored.

I also enjoy hiding and jumping out at people or dogs as they walk by and LOVE opening drawers and cabinets and hiding in those too.

I am not real afraid of dogs yet, maybe not so smart of me. I have not gotten brave enough to wander to the front of the building yet, that pet door is scary. One day soon I hope to be greeting the clients and letting them pet me, but I am still working on my kitty manners.
